Project Overview
As part of the Collaborative Projects course, our group partnered with The Barrett Centre of Innovation in Sustainable Urban Agriculture to design a user-centered UI/UX experience that would host three educational and engaging web-based games. These games were intended to promote awareness and knowledge about sustainable urban farming practices in a way that is interactive, inclusive, and appealing to a broad audience, including children, students, and visitors to the centre. I led a multidisciplinary team of designers and developers, overseeing the full design cycle—from research and ideation to prototyping and presentation.
Objectives
The primary objective was to develop a cohesive and intuitive digital platform that could seamlessly integrate three distinct games while maintaining a consistent and user-friendly experience. We aimed to ensure that the interface would be visually engaging, accessible, and educational, reinforcing the Barrett Centre’s mission of sustainability through play. Our team focused on creating wireframes, interactive prototypes, and a scalable design system that aligned with the Barrett Centre’s branding and core values. As group leader, my goal was also to maintain clear communication, distribute tasks effectively, and ensure timely deliverables from all team members.
Challenges
One of the major challenges we faced was aligning the visual and functional design across three different games while ensuring they felt part of one unified platform. Balancing educational value with playability and engagement required careful planning and user-centered design thinking. Coordinating input from multiple team members with varying skill sets and availability also presented organizational challenges. Additionally, ensuring accessibility and usability for a diverse user base—including children and non-digital natives—meant we had to pay close attention to UI clarity, color contrast, font size, and intuitive navigation. As the group leader, maintaining team motivation and resolving conflicting ideas constructively were key aspects of managing the project.
